The extravagant „Hoffmann Balls“ Earstud are inspired by the „seven-ball chair“, by Josef Hoffmann. J. & J. Kohn commissioned Hoffmann to design a house and interior for the 1908 Art Show. The art show was held in parallel with the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the throne for Emperor Franz Joseph I in Vienna. As the artists were not invited to the imperial procession, they took the opportunity to use the temporarily disused building site on Karlsplatz, which had been earmarked for the concert hall, as an exhibition space. Thus Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt, Otto Prutscher and Koloman Moser erected and designed wooden buildings with 54 exhibition rooms within a few months. For the furnishing of the house, Hoffmann used some of his already well-known furniture such as the „Seating Machine“ or the „Bat Seating Set“. For the veranda, Hoffmann presented the „seven-ball chair“. Particularly striking is the high backrest in the abstracted form of two hairpins connected by seven ball ornaments. This modern design element inspired me to create a simple yet extravagant piece of jewellery. Since only very few pieces of the „Seven Ball Chair“ were produced, it is one of the most sought-after collector’s items of Josef Hoffmann’s entire oeuvre.
